Internists
Description:
Internists are physicians uniquely trained to diagnose and treat major symptoms and diseases of the adult (from adolescence to geriatrics). An internist not only treats primary care problems such as colds and joint aches, but also is specially trained to evaluate and manage the more serious illnesses of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiac, gastrointestinal, kidney, and lung diseases. General internists have an understanding of the inter-relationship of the various systems within the body, and are thus able to coordinate patient care through the diagnosis, treatment and specialty referrals needed for complex medical problems. In addition they are concerned with disease prevention through control of personal and family risk factors.
